Pulborough Conservation Group

What's New

Sadly, the majority of the group has now closed down.  Whilst there were plenty of good citizens keen to subscribe to the concept, few were prepared to actually get muddy. The consequence was that little work was done.

This web site remains as a monument to its hopes and a record of its activities.

Meanwhile, the Pocket Park Association continues to run under the leadership of John Garrett.

Introduction

The Pulborough Conservation Group was formed in July 2000 in response to the demand expressed in the Village Appraisal. It meets once or twice a month in the field and every three months in the Pulborough Village Hall.  It is affiliated to the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers from whom it obtains invaluable advice. Members range from the novice to the experienced.

Current Projects

Restrictions imposed because of foot and mouth disease severely affected work in the first half of 2001.

This has proved to be a challenging topic and it is taking longer than first envisaged to sort out a practicable way of working. We are making progress with mapping and we are in conversation  with the Low Weald Warden who is an employee of West Sussex County Council.

This is the stretch of woodland/wetland between the rear of Harwoods garage on London Road and the recreation ground. It has been run (and continues to be run) since 1987 by the Pocket Park Association. The conservation group has been adding its muscle recently to assist with dredging the stream and making a start on the construction of an amphibian friendly wet bit.

The next few Pocket Park Association working parties will be held on the following dates at 10:00.

This neglected 'conservation area' lies between Rivermead and the wildbrooks floodplain. In consultation with the BTCV, the committee is currently refining a management plan. This includes a wild flower meadow at the top of the slope and a boggy bit at the bottom.

Some clearance work was undertaken during January and February 2001. Work then ceased for the duration of the FMD restrictions. It restarted on 23rd June.

Calendar

Wellies and stout gloves are a must for Rivermead and Pocket Park. Spades, forks, bow saws etc are useful.
